MYN Classes

The Sebastopol Fire Department has been providing MYN (Meet Your Neighbors) Classes since 2010.  The MYN Class utilizes the framework of the 8 Steps and is an interactive time to discuss information, ideas and concerns about preparing and responding to emergencies in our neighborhoods. The objectives of the class are for attendees to become familiar with the basic framework of MYN and to feel confident enough in the framework to connect with their neighbors about it.

The fires of 2017 expanded the reach and effectiveness in neighborhood preparedness to include the Sebastopol Neighborhood Communications Unit (SNCU). SNCU developed a radio service coverage plan that will support MYN Leaders and their neighborhoods with radio back-up communications when normal communications fail. MYN Leaders and interested neighbors will receive basic ‘skills training’ in the use of preferred handheld radios and appropriate protocols for sending and receiving messages during an emergency. The objectives of the ‘skills training’ are for radio users to become familiar enough with their radio and the message sharing techniques to be effective under pressure.

Both MYN and SNCU are currently offering ‘in-person’ MYN classes or SNCU skills training regularly. MYN Classes and the SNCU skills trainings are free. Practice radios are available during SNCU classes. Personal or neighborhood radio equipment, if wanted, will need to be purchased. Recommendations for equipment and costs will be available from SNCU.
